Quantum Computing Application Analyst

Job Summary

This position reports to the company’s head of Applications and Performance. The position involves developing applications and benchmarks of quantum computing (QC) and assessing complex scientific problems to identify where quantum computing can accelerate the workloads. This position requires a deep understanding of quantum algorithms in the context of scientific applications, and the software challenges which must be overcome to optimize for and emulate current noisy devices.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Evaluating quantum algorithms for near-future quantum computers.
  • Creating and optimizing quantum benchmarks.
  • Developing noise models for HPC emulators of QC.
  • Improving application performance on hybrid HPC-QC systems.
  • Optimizing scientific applications with integrated quantum kernels.
  • Training and supporting external partners and customers on our Quantum software products.

Expected education and experience

  • PhD in Quantum Physics, Computer Science, Mathematics, Engineering, or a related field.
  • At least 3 years work experience outside of a post-doc desired.

Essential skills

  • Experience with parallel scientific applications and/or HPC workflow frameworks.
  • Expert knowledge of Qiskit, Cirq, PennyLane, or similar frameworks.
  • Expert knowledge of quantum mechanics, quantum algorithms and quantum circuits.
  • Knowledge of NISQ hybrid quantum algorithms and applications.
  • Familiarity with the quantum hardware and providers (quantum annealers, superconducting qubits, neutral atoms, trapped ions, photonics).
  • Strong competence in a programming language (C, C++, python).
  • The ability to quickly learn new skills.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and analytical ability.
  • The ability to effectively communicate scientific results and complex concepts to domain experts and non-experts.
  • Fluency (written & spoken) in English.

Desirable skills

  • Experience with HPC application performance modelling.
  • 6+ years of software development experience.
  • Familiarity with Linux, bash.
  • Experience with cloud environments and container orchestration.
  • Experience with optimization techniques and state-of-the-art machine learning tools.

Job conditions

  • Location: Munich (Germany) and Switzerland
  • Flexible working hours, flexible workplace including home office
  • Office available near our German headquarter in Munich
  • Occasional travels, mostly to destinations in Europe
