ParTec at EuroQHPC 2024

The first edition of the European Workshop on Quantum Computing for High-Performance Computing, held in Madrid from August 26-30, 2024, brought together leading experts to explore the rapidly evolving intersection of Quantum Computing and High-Performance Computing (HPC).

The purpose of the workshop was to discuss topics that are of importance for the integration of Quantum Processing Units (QPUs) into High-Performance Computing (HPC) facilities.

ParTec had the opportunity to present a paper on the Quantum Workbench.

Key takeaways from the session

  • Ongoing Exploration: No one has all the answers yet, and there are no definitive solutions. The workshop highlighted that quantum computing is still in its early stages, with more progress to happen. Unlike classical computing, which has been refined over decades, the quantum computing landscape remains broad and rapidly evolving.
  • Interest in Quantum Workbench: There is clear interest in the Quantum Workbench, as demonstrated by similar research presented at EuroQHPC, focusing on Quantum Machine Learning (QML) tooling. This highlights a growing demand for supportive development tooling. However, current frameworks like Qiskit, PennyLane, and Cirq do not fully meet all the needs of developers yet.
  • Hybrid Approach Acceptance: There is increasing recognition that classical computers will continue to play a significant role, with quantum computers acting as accelerators. All the presentations showcased hybrid models, reinforcing the relevance of a hybrid HPCQC strategy. Given that quantum computers are still small, we must find ways to work with the existing capabilities in combination with classical computing.
