ParTec at Bitkom Joint Meeting
Advanced Computing for AI: Potential of HPC and new computing technologies

The Bitkom joint meeting of the High Performance Computing & Quantum Computing and Artificial Intelligence working groups took place at Microsoft Deutschland in Munich on April 18th. Titled “Advanced Computing for AI: Potenziale von HPC und neuen Rechentechnologien,” members from both groups came together in person and online to discuss the future integration of AI and Quantum technologies with classical computing, particularly in the realm of HPC.

The meeting featured two keynote presentations by Microsoft and Intel, as well as research-focused talks such as ““Was können wir von konkreten Anwendungen für Quantencomputing lernen?“ (“What can we learn from specific applications for Quantum computing?”) presented by Fraunhofer IKS, and an infrastructure-focused presentation titled ” Das Zusammenspiel von „Klassisch“ und Quantum als Wegbereiter für AI/ML-Anwendungen – ParTec’s Quantenlösung für INQI” (“The interaction of ‘classical’ and Quantum as enablers for AI/ML applications – ParTec’s Quantum Solution for INQI”) delivered by Dr. Stefan Kister from ParTec.

  • The foundation of high-quality AI software and hardware solutions has already been established and is functional. However, it is also widely recognised within the working group that as technology stacks mature, they must be used and validated within specific customer contexts and use cases.
  • Research activities in recent years highlight the many hurdles still to overcome before QML can reach its full potential. Concrete examples, such as medical imaging, underscore the importance of integrating of classical and quantum computers is crucial.
  • Upcoming lighthouse projects, such as the first European exascale-class supercomputer Jupiter (scheduled for 2025), are designed to handle the most demanding simulations and computationally intensive AI applications in academia and industry. Examples are training of large foundational models for genAI, simulating new advanced materials, creating digital twins of human heart or brain for medical purposes, validating quantum computers, simulating climate in high-resolution encompassing entire Earth.
  • INQI’s project with the establishment of an Israeli QCC already demonstrates an early solution for fully integrating classical and quantum computing using a quantum cloud platform solution from ParTec AG. It deals with the study of use cases in the fields of optimization, simulation, machine learning, as well as assisting in dealing with today’s noisy and size-limited quantum computers, which are composed of various components.
  • The key parts of ParTec’s Quantum Cloud solution comprises a quantum computer built from various vendors’ components. The quantum computer is rigorously tested and certified in the soon to be launched ParTec Quantum Factory in Munich. Additionally, it incorporates standard open-source software components augmented by ParTec’ API QBridge and Quantum monitoring and control software, enabling a seamlessly integration of QC into HPC.
