HPC System Engineer

Job Summary

This position is part of ParTec’s Customer Solutions Team and reports to the Manager of Customer Service. The HPC System Engineer will maintain and support the operation of the first European Exascale HPC system JUPITER at the Jülich Supercomputing Centre JSC.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Providing 1st-level support for the setup, configuration, and administration of the largest HPC system in Europe.
  • Analysis, classification and solution of problems in tight communication with the customer and hardware and software partners, as well as with ParTec’s software development team.
  • Automation of daily-day routine jobs using scripting languages.
  • Lightweight HW interventions such as exchange of customer-replaceable units.

Expected education and experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field (or equivalent experience) and a minimum of 3 years of directly related experience.
  • Experience with large-scale HPC system installations.

Essential skills

  • Solid experience with Linux administration (Red Hat- and SuSE-based), including network configuration, package management, parallel file systems, and high- availability setups.
  • Thorough knowledge of shell and at least one other scripting language, e.g. Python.
  • Experience with containerisation, virtualisation, and infrastructure-as-a-code solutions such as Ansible.
  • Experience with Lustre and/or GPFS parallel file systems.
  • Customer- and solution-oriented attitude.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Capability to work under strong time pressure and under difficult circumstances.
  • Fluency (written & spoken) in German and English.

Desirable skills

  • Proficiency in additional European languages is a plus.
  • Experience with large scale InfiniBand clusters, preferably with recent technology like NDR and UFM.

Job conditions

  • Location: home office within 1h driving distance from the Jülich Research Centre, Germany (Aachen- Cologne) plus on-site work at Jülich Research Centre as needed.
  • Working hours dependent on the service level agreement with the customer. Standard day working hours plus regular night and weekend on-call service.
  • No further travel requirements
